THE LAST SLUMBER PARTY (1988)

Main Genre: Horror

Sub Genre: Slasher

Color, 80 Minutes

Director: Stephen Tyler

Notable Stars: sad violin and crickets

I’ve been watching this movie for 20 years and I still pop it in for those party nights. I saw it when I was a kid and thought it was TOTALLY AWESOME and loved that it was part of the slasher universe. I re-watched it when I was an adult and my thoughts of it being this well crafted film were wrong. It’s totally awful, edited poorly and it’s definitely homophobic. Beyond all that it’s a fun summer slumber party extravaganza. There is a point in the movie where it takes on this “is it a dream” plot where it could be a dream, it could not be, etc… and this weird plot detour has shades of Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon. I wouldn’t say it’s as good or thoughtful but it has moments of magic in that the film becomes a loose experimental horror. There is a lot of derogatory statements against gay people which overtime will kill this movie. It’s never comfortable but things like Sleepaway Camp exist which is a movie that is revered in the horror community so I say this gets a pass.
